Wenger - Martinez has grown in stature

Arsene Wenger has stressed his complete confidence in Emiliano Martinez ahead of the goalkeeper’s Champions League debut on Wednesday night.

With Wojciech Szczesny suspended and David Ospina injured for the trip to Anderlecht, the 22-year-old will start the game in Brussels.

Martinez has made two League Cup appearances in his time at Arsenal, including the 7-5 win at Reading two years ago, and Wenger believes he is a very different prospect these days.

"We see him train every day, see what he can do and we are confident he will be ready"

Wilshere on Martinez

“He is two years older now and has a good experience,” the manager said. “He has grown in stature as well.

“I am extremely confident, because he has experience from [a loan spell at] Sheffield Wednesday last year and, when he played for us, he did very well. I have no special worry about that.

“We have to make it as comfortable a night as we can for him, and that is by defending well as a team.”

Jack Wilshere insisted that the whole team would help Martinez during this vital Group D fixture.

"We see him train every day, see what he can do and we are confident he will be ready," he said. "He is in our dressing room now, so we know him well, he is confident and has grown up quite a lot in the last two years.

"He has learned from [playing at] Sheffield Wednesday in a tough league, especially as a foreign keeper, so he has learned a lot."
