AFCON 2019: Iwobi books place in semi-final

Iwobi

The Africa Cup of Nations continued on Wednesday night. Scroll down to find out who was involved:

Alex Iwobi played a key role in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over South Africa on Wednesday night, helping them seal their place in the semi-final of the competition.

It was a scrappy start to the game with both sides struggling to maintain possession - but through a charging run and a deflected pass by Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze received the ball inside the area and fired past Ronwen Williams.

South Africa bounced back after the break through Bongani Zungu’s looping header.

But Nigeria pushed on in search of a winner - and in the 89th minute that’s exactly what they got, when William Troost-Ekong latched on to a corner delivery and secured progression to the next round.

Iwobi played 91 minutes before being replaced. Nigeria will find out their semi-final opponents on Thursday night, and will play on Sunday at 8pm (UK time).
