Interview

Montemurro on Foord, FA Cup, Grant, Filis

Montemurro

Joe Montemurro was full of praise for his squad and the Women’s FA Cup itself as we advanced into the quarter-finals of the competition with a 2-0 victory over Lewes on Sunday.

Caitlin Foord scored during on her debut, while Melissa Filis and Ruby Grant also started at Meadow Park.

We spoke to our head coach after the match, and this is what he said:

on the performance…

It was exactly what we wanted. We were professional in terms of getting players some minutes, it was good to give some players some games and we got everyone in a good shape for next week’s game. It was a good test for us.

on his words at half-time…

We had to continue what we were doing and it was just a matter of time before we produced that final product and that final situation. We got there many times in the first half but we have to finish them and that’s part of the game. I think we just relaxed a little bit more and we just got into our rhythm and found the opportunities.

on Caitlin Foord’s arrival…

She’s been great, she’s a great girl to have around and all the players have really taken to her and really welcomed her. We look forward to some really exciting stuff from her in the coming weeks.

on the importance of the FA Cup…

Every competition that we’re in is important, there’s not one that we take lightly. We go out to win every competition for the respect of the competition and also for th Arsenal brand. It’s very important that we play our football, I think we did really well today in keeping the ball and trying to probe and open up. The style that we do it is very important so they’re all important competitions for us.

on Melisa Fillis and Ruby Grant’s development…

They have to be patient. Opportunities are few and far between and today was a great opportunity to give them some match minutes and it’s just game rhythm for them now. With the more opportunities they get, the more into the rhythm they become with the tempo that we play. They’ll be fine and it’s great to give young players the opportunities and I love working with young players and helping them develop.
