World Cup: Dutch trio star against Canada

Netherlands

Three of our stars were in World Cup action on Thursday night. Read on to find out how they fared.

Vivianne Miedema, Danielle van de Donk and Jill Roord helped the Netherlands to take top spot in Group E on Thursday night, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Canada.

Miedema came close to an opener when she lost her marker with a Cruyff turn and fired a low effort off the post, but Sarina Wiegman’s side would have to wait until the 54th minute to take the lead.

That moment came around when Sherida Spitse whipped a dangerous delivery into the path of Anouk Dekker, who was there to climb high and head the ball into the top corner.

Canada eventually pulled one back through Christine Sinclair on the hour-mark, but Lineth Beerensteyn was on hand to restore the Netherlands’ lead with a simple finish 15 minutes from time.

As a result, our Dutch trio finished top of Group E on nine points, having won all three of their group-stage outings.

They will now face Japan in the last-16 on Tuesday, June 26 (8pm).
