Summary

An Arsenal XI side ran out as 4-0 winners over Boreham Wood at Meadow Park on Thursday, with Chuba Akpom, Stephy Mavididi and Jon Toral all on the scoresheet.

Akpom broke the deadlock early on with a penalty, after Eddie Nketiah was tripped in the box.

Our second goal followed soon after, when Mavididi chested Akpom’s lofted pass down and scooped the ball over the goalkeeper.

Shortly before the half-time break Toral added our third with an easy finish.

The fourth and final goal came just moments after the interval as Mavididi cooly slotted the ball in at the near post.

Setting the scene

Steve Gatting was able to call upon Mathieu Debuchy, Akpom and Carl Jenkinson, while Jeff Reine-Adelaide was also given a starting berth.

Matt Macey started in goal behind a back three of Debuchy, Krystian Bielik and Julio Pleguzuelo.

In midfield, Jenkinson lined up alongside Reine-Adeleide, Jon Toral and Cohen Bramall.

Akpom led the line, supported by Nketiah and Mavididi in behind.

First half

After a slow start, the game roared into life in the ninth minute when Nketiah saw a header spectacularly tipped over the crossbar by Boreham Wood goalkeeper Grant Smith.

Just moments later, Nketiah was tripped in the penalty area as he lined up a shot on goal. Akpom then slotted the resulting penalty into the bottom corner to give us an early lead.

After being denied once, Mavididi wasn’t put off and soon found the goal he was in search of to double our lead. The forward met Akpom’s lofted pass, chested the ball down and delightfully lifted his finish over the goalkeeper.

With the first half coming to a close, we added a third goal, as Toral poked the ball home after Nketiah’s initial shot was saved.

Second half

Shortly after the break, we added a fourth, as Mavididi netted his second with a low finish.

With us firmly in control, the game slowed down somewhat, but we still managed to create opportunities. In the 68th minute, Akpom came close to scoring his second of the night, when he sent a thunderous shot crashing off the crossbar.

Just a few moments later, substitute Donyell Malen came close to scoring himself, when he sent a powerful strike just wide of the near post, following a swift counter-attack.
