Euro 2020: Xhaka makes history against France

Congratulations to Granit Xhaka, who has led Switzerland to their first-ever European Championship quarter-final.

Our midfielder captained his country to a shock victory over tournament favourites and reigning world champions France on Monday evening, following a dramatic encounter in Bucharest.

Haris Seferovic got the underdogs off to a perfect start inside 15 minutes but after Ricardo Rodriguez failed to convert from the spot, Karim Benzema struck twice inside four minutes to turn the tie on its head.

Paul Pogba looked to have secured the win for France when he curled into the top corner from 25 yards, but with just nine minutes to go Seferovic scored again, before Mario Gavranovic latched onto Xhaka's pass to thunder home a 90th-minute equaliser.

Yann Sommer made a reaction stop from Benjamin Pavard as a goalless extra-time came and went, and the game went all the way to penalties. Nine takers held their nerve to find the net but when Kylian Mbappe stepped up, Sommer stood firm to book Switzerland's place in their first-ever European Championship quarter-final.

And it'll be another tough test for the Swiss, who face Spain in Saint Petersburg on Friday, July 2 at 5pm (UK time). Spain secured their last-eight spot with a dramatic extra-time victory over Croatia on Monday evening.

The next Gunners in action could be Bukayo Saka and Bernd Leno when England play Germany at Wembley on Monday evening. The game kicks off in the capital at 5pm (UK time), with the victors facing the winner of Sweden v Ukraine in Roma on Saturday, July 3.
