WHAT HAPPENED

Caitlin Foord scored on her debut as we booked our place in the Women’s FA Cup quarter-final with a 2-0 victory over Lewes at Meadow Park.

Although the Australia international was making her maiden appearance since her January transfer, the game’s first chance fell to a more familiar face in Jordan Nobbs who collected the ball on the edge of the box and took a touch before firing wide.

Midway through the first half Foord almost broke the deadlock when she lost her marker and looked certain to tap home Nobbs’ cross, but the ball narrowly evaded our striker’s path.

On the stroke of half-time Jill Roord tried her luck from distance and saw her goal-bound strike blocked brilliantly by Caitlin Hayes to prevent us from taking the lead.

Lewes looked uncomfortable when playing out from the back and Foord almost capitalised on Sophie Harris’s error when she pinched the ball from the goalkeeper, but saw her first-time strike bounce back off the post.

Ten minutes after the restart our pressure paid off when Danielle van de Donk’s initial strike was parried by Harris, and Foord was quick to react to a rebound to tap into an empty net.

Inside 70 minutes Louise Quinn almost doubled our lead when an in-swinging corner found her at the back post, before her powerful headed effort flew over the bar from close range.

In the closing stages of the match we sealed our progression into the last-eight when Vivianne Miedema won back possession from Harris’s tame goal-kick, before teeing up Van de Donk who slotted home.

WHAT IT MEANS

Victory against Lewes in the fifth round sets up a quarter-final tie with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Meadow Park.

Spurs reached the last-eight with a 5-0 victory over Coventry City away from home.

WHAT’S NEXT

We next travel to the City Ground in the Continental League Cup final on Saturday, February 29 where we’ll face Chelsea for the third time this season.
