We slipped to defeat in the final of the SSE Women’s FA Cup on Saturday, as Chelsea ran out 3-1 winners at Wembley.

Vivianne Miedema’s goal in the 73rd minute gave us hope of sparking a comeback, but Fran Kirby was quick to restore the Blues’ two-goal lead at the end of a frustrating afternoon in north London.

Jordan Nobbs made two darting runs down the right wing in the opening stages, but the Chelsea defence held their shape to deny Miedema an opener.

Shortly after a fantastic recovery from Maren Mjelde denied Beth Mead from racing through on goal, Miedema nutmegged Drew Spence in the box and watched on as her deflected effort fell just wide of the post.

The remainder of the first half proved to be a tightly contested battle, but not before Ji So-yun gave us a late scare, as she fired over from 10 yards out.

We had failed to take our chances before the break and just three minutes into the second 45, the Blues made us pay.

Ramona Bachmann raced through on goal and fired into the roof of the net from 12 yards out, before she doubled their lead just 12 minutes later with a deflected effort from the edge of the box.

But in the 73rd minute, we responded in the best possible fashion. Mead stormed down the left wing and beat her marker, before picking out Miedema who slammed home at the far post.

Our hopes of a comeback wouldn’t last long, though, as Fran Kirby fired past Sari Van Veenendaal just three minutes later.
