Arsenal v Yeovil - The Brief

AWFC

We have the opportunity to record back-to-back wins in the Women’s Super League on Wednesday when we host Yeovil Town at Meadow Park.

THE STORY SO FAR

We’re currently second in the WSL table on 33 points, having picked up 11 wins from 13 outings. Manchester City are the league leaders, but only as a result of playing two more games than us.

During our most recent WSL fixture, we ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Reading, thanks to goals from Vivianne Miedema, Kim Little and Katie McCabe.

Miedema’s opener proved to be a record-breaking goal, as she became the first-ever player to score 16 times in a single WSL season, before Little converted from the spot and McCabe found the top left corner from 25 yards.

Shortly after we defeated Crawley Wasps 4-0 in the SSE Women’s FA Cup and Manchester United 2-1 in the Continental Tyres Cup, but this was unfortunately followed up by a 3-0 FA Cup loss at the hands of Chelsea

A win on Wednesday night will see us return to the top of the WSL table.

THE OPPOSITION

Yeovil are currently rock-bottom of the WSL having recorded just one win from 13 attempts, placing them three points adrift of Everton in 10th place.

They’ve lost each of their last nine outings across all competitions, conceding 34 goals in the process and scoring just five.

In addition to this, they’ve also conceded the most goals in the WSL this season (39), shipping three goals per game on average. Only Everton (7) have scored fewer in the WSL than Lee Burch’s side (8).

The last time we faced the Glovers we ran out 7-0 winners on the road, inflicting their worst home defeat of the season.

Ann-Marie Heatherson and Ellie Leigh Mason are their greatest goal threats, having both scored twice in 17 and 18 appearances respectively.

MANAGER’S NOTES

“Yeovil is a big game for us,” said Joe Montemurro. “We’ve got to find 11 bodies who can compete for us on Wednesday. It’s going to be difficult but there are no excuses. We’re just going to soldier on and keep fighting.”

ONE TO WATCH

After failing to start on Sunday due to illness, Leah Williamson will be desperate to help the team return to winning ways on Wednesday night .

On what was a disappointing afternoon against Chelsea, the 21-year-old made a positive impact off the bench, displaying some tidy footwork and playing some probing passes.

With Yeovil most likely adopting a defensive strategy for Wednesday’s game, we’ll be needing Williamson’s ball-playing ability to kickstart attacks and break the lines.
