‘We’re together now and we’ll stay together’

Leah Williamson was rightly proud of her team-mates after Saturday’s SSE Women’s FA Cup final.

Despite losing to Chelsea, Joe Montemurro’s side fought together right until the final whistle and while our performance wasn’t enough on the day, Williamson is confident that we have enough quality within our squad to win more silverware in the near future.

“I’m immensely proud of the team,” she told Arsenal Player. “We’re together now and we were together when we watched them lift the trophy. We will stay together. We’ve grown so much and come so far together.

“Every game’s been a massive game for us and maybe that takes its toll emotionally, but we will do better next time and we will be here again - we know we will be. It’s just about getting over it as quickly as possible.

“Chelsea’s attacking threat is so strong. You give them an inch and they’ll take it. It was probably our worst half of the season in the first half and we kept them out, so I thought maybe it would be our day.

“At half-time Joe told us that we basically got through hell first half and we didn't deserve to be winning in the first half, but I thought if we did what he said we could turn it around.

“Congratulations to Chelsea because we were looking for that goal and growing in confidence. They shot us straight back. But after we got that goal back I really thought that was it. In the second we showed a little more the team that we are and the confident that we all have but it just wasn’t there in the first half.”
