Match report: Arsenal Women 7-0 Bristol City

WHAT HAPPENED

We’re now just one game away from the quarter-finals of the Continental League Cup, following a commanding 7-0 victory over Bristol City at Meadow Park.

The win puts us two points ahead of the Robbins and Brighton & Hove Albion in Group B, prior to our final match against London Bees next month.

We started strongly and came close when Jordan Nobbs picked up the ball outside the box and found Vivianne Miedema, who had made a great run but directed her effort wide.

The visitors almost scored with 15 minutes remaining of the first half when Charlie Wellings broke down the wing and delivered a dangerous across goal, but Pauline Peyraud-Magnin came off her line and punched clear.

Seconds later, on the counter attack, Kim Little played a well-timed one-two with Lisa Evans which gave our captain space in the box to fire past Baggaley.

Our second came on the stroke of half-time when Jill Roord’s tame effort looked set to be collected by Baggaley, before Gemma Evans’s outstretched leg directed the ball into the back of the net.

We were awarded a penalty for a handball early in the second half and Little made no mistake from the spot to make it three.

There was a slice of fortune for our fourth as Baggaley was beaten by a second deflected effort when Miedema’s strike from a corner hit a Robbins defender and trickled into the net.

With 15 minutes remaining, Evans broke down the right and delivered an inviting ball into the box where Miedema grabbed her second from close range.

Nobbs scored our sixth in the closing stages when Leonie Maier ran down the left and squared the ball to the England international, who curled home from inside the six-yard-box.

Jen Beattie then completed the rout when the ball broke to her on the edge of the box and she slammed home.
