Loan Watch: Olayinka scores first senior goal

James Olayinka scored his first senior goal in emphatic fashion for Southend on Saturday.

Our 20-year-old midfielder picked the ball up deep inside his own half before running the length of the pitch and converting smartly into the bottom corner. 

 

Despite Olayinka's heroics, it was a day to forget for Southend, who were 2-0 down after 51 minutes against Boreham Wood at Meadow Park. Goals from Jamal Fyfield and Mark Ricketts gave the home side an early advantage, before Southend struck back through Brandon Goodship and Terrell Egbri to take the Emirates FA Cup clash into extra-time. 

 

Kabongo Tshimanga then restored the hosts’ lead from the spot before Olayinka's brilliant solo goal took the game to a penalty shoot-out. Our youngster put his spot kick away but misses from Matt Rush and Jason Demetriou secured Boreham Wood's progression to the next round.  

  

Harrison Clarke played the full match as Oldham beat Hampton & Richmond 3-2 in The Emirates FA Cup first round. Ben Garrity and Bobby Grant scored either side of Sam Deadfield's 30th-minute penalty to give Oldham a 2-1 lead at half-time. 

 

Danny Rowe then grabbed Oldham's third before Deadfield struck again with 15 minutes to play to finish the scoring. The draw for the second round proper of the Emirates FA Cup will take place on Monday, November 9.

 

Tolaji Bola played 73 minutes as Rochdale were beaten 2-1 by Stockport at Spotland Stadium. Our young defender was replaced by Stephen Dooley late on as Dale tried to find a way back into the match. 

The game burst into life after just seven minutes when John Rooney scored an absolute belter from inside his own half to give Stockport an early lead. The visitors then doubled their advantage minutes later as Alex Reid made it 2-0 inside of 15 minutes. 

 

Rochdale then got on the scoresheet themselves through Matthew Lund but it wasn't enough to prevent Stockport progressing into the next round. 

  

Mark McGuinness was in action for Ipswich this weekend as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Portsmouth in extra time. The game was level at 2-2 after 111 minutes when Sean Raggett notched late to send Pompey through. 

 

McGuinness played the full match but will now turn his attention to his sides EFL Trophy game against Crawley Town on Tuesday. 

 

Ben Sheaf started his eighth consecutive game for Coventry as they were beaten 3-2 by Watford in the Championship. The Hornets took the lead through Andre Gray before Gustavo Hamer and Tyler Walker hit back to put the visitors in front after the hour mark. 

 

The advantage was to last just two minutes though, William Troost-Ekong was set-up by James Garner to put Watford level before Ismaila Sarr converted from the spot to take all three points at Vicarage Road. The result leaves Sheaf's side 21st in the table, one place above the drop zone. 

 

Matthew Smith played the full game as Swindon lost 2-1 to Darlington at home. Adam Campbell scored either side of Brett Pitman's first-half strike to put Darlington into the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.  

 

Trae Coyle came off the bench for Gillingham this weekend as they beat Woking 3-2 in the Emirates FA Cup. Coyle replaced Thomas O'Connor with his side trailing 2-1. His introduction proved to be the catalyst Gillingham needed as they scored twice in 20 minutes to progress. 

 

Elsewhere, Matteo Guendouzi started his first game for Hertha Berlin as they ran out 3-0 winners against Augsburg. Our midfielder was ruled out of the first two games of his loan spell after a testing positive for COVID-19 but returned to make his debut off the bench last weekend. 

 

The Frenchman played the full 90 minutes on Saturday though, as Matheus Cunha, Dodi Lukebakio and Krzysztof Piatek all scored in Hertha's second win of the season. 

 

Lucas Torreira came off the bench as Atletico Madrid won 4-0 against Cadiz in La Liga. The Uruguayan replaced Hector Herrera with the score at 3-0 after goals from Joao Felix, Marcos Llorente and Luis Suarez made the closing stages comfortable. 

 

Felix then hit his second of the night in the 90th minute. The result leaves Atletico third in La Liga, two points off top spot with two games in hand.
