World Cup: Monreal’s Spain record first win

Nacho Monreal

Nacho Monreal was an unused substitute as Spain recorded their first win of the 2018 World Cup, defeating Iran 1-0 in Group B on Wednesday evening.

Fernando Hierro’s side were the dominant force throughout the entirety of the first half, but Iran’s defence stood strong to keep the Spaniards at bay.

Just nine minutes after the break, though, Diego Costa received the ball on the turn and found the back of the net through a fortunate deflection.

The result means that Spain have joined Portugal at the top of Group B on four points, level on goal difference.

Monreal will have another opportunity to feature for Spain in the group stage when they face Morocco on Monday at 7pm (UK time).
