Young Gun: Tyreece John-Jules

In Young Guns, featured first in the official matchday programme, we find out about the next generation of Arsenal youngsters, in their own words. Next up, we speak to versatile forward Tyreece John-Jules.

When I’m asked what my main strengths are I have to say they’re my finishing, strength and link-up play.

I’m reasonably quick but I’m working on getting quicker. I spend a lot of time with the fitness coach because adding pace makes a striker more dangerous. I score goals with both feet as I’m comfortable shooting with left or right. That’s an advantage as defenders don’t know which way to show me. Being two-footed is important. From a very young age I worked hard - and still do - on developing my left foot as I’m naturally right-footed.

I joined Arsenal when I was eight, having been spotted playing against them for Charlton. I was invited to attend a trial and was signed within a week. My family used to take me from Queens Park to Hale End and training at Arsenal was top quality, to the extent that even now the training we had at Hale End is very similar to what we do as full-time scholars – the difference is that we train every day.

I now live in digs in Enfield. Eddie Nketiah is there too, as is Vontae Daley-Campbell. We’re all very well looked after by our landlady, Lena. She makes us feel at home, which allows us to concentrate on football and is a big reassurance to our families. The other good thing about being with Eddie and Vontae is that we’re all very good friends and can talk things through when we need to.

Eddie has played with the first team and he’s told us about his experiences, which I hope will be of help in the future. The fact that players like Eddie, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson have played with the first team is very encouraging to us all. It shows that Arsenal give opportunities to young players. Playing for the first team is of course my long-term aim but in the short term I hope to play as many games as I can for the under-18s and under-23s. If I can get plenty of goals that will be a massive help!
