Taylor - It was important to show real grit

Jodie Taylor kicked off the new season in style as she netted a brace, including a last-minute winner, in our WSL opener against Birmingham City Ladies on Sunday.

The England international made an instant impression as we twice came back to secure a big three points, and this is what she told Arsenal.com after the game.

on the performance…

I thought it was gritty and we showed our character. Obviously everyone knows that Arsenal’s a big football club that plays nice football, but I think today we showed the fight and determination, which for me is a huge thing coming into this season. It was a tough one, going a player down and a goal down meant that the odds were against us, but again we showed that fight and that mentality to make a comeback and we did.

on the upcoming season…

Yeah I’m looking forward to it. Obviously it was a major tournament and then a major low on the national team front, but a big season ahead for Arsenal and for what the team wants to achieve. It’s a long time coming, a real season now, fighting and winning the full season, not just the Spring Series, a Champions League spot and all of that, so we’ve got high hopes for the season and just happy to be out on the field.

on the new signings…

Really good, we’ve made some great additions to the team. Lisa’s awesome, I really love playing with her and I think how she plays I really like, it suits me and we combine well. Jess as well, especially down that right side with both of them is key. Obviously Viv [Miedema] is out at the moment, but at the same time she’s going to bring quality as well, so it’s exciting times.

on the upcoming game against Manchester City…

It’s going to be hard, a tough game. They have a lovely stadium and i love playing up there. It is a bit of a tight turnaround considering it is on Saturday and it’s always a hard game against them, but we got the three points today and we’re always going to be up for the big games. i thin it’s matches against teams like Birmingham where we struggled against and where we dropped points that cost us at the end of the year, so we’ll take it one game at a time.
