'It’s a relief to get off the mark'

Stephy Mavididi opened his account for the season in the 2-1 win over Chelsea Under-23s on Friday evening.

The Derby-born striker scored the game's winning goal with just eight minutes remaining at Stamford Bridge, and here's what he had to say to ArsenalPlayer post-match:

on the win…
It was a good win, we needed it. Especially throughout our last game, we needed it. It was a good win, the team worked hard and I’m happy to get the three points.

on going to Stamford Bridge and winning…
It’s one of our toughest and biggest games of the season. Not many teams come to Stamford Bridge and get three points so we’re happy with the win.

on Chelsea pushing them all the way…
They’ve got some good players, some of us play together at England so we know each other really well. We always knew it was going to be a tough game coming to Stamford Bridge and playing Chelsea, but we did the job and got the three points.

on the response after Monday’s loss…
We needed it as a team, Everton was a tough game but we knew we had two back-to-back tough games so we had to adjust and we’ve come here and done really well. All the lads played well and I’m happy.

on the winning goal…
I saw Ainsley on the halfway line, he had time and space so I thought ‘I could be in!’ so I’ve pulled off the centre back and the ball’s come over. I’ve controlled it, and seen the centre back come across, so I thought ‘maybe just try and get half a yard’ and I got half a yard and just struck the ball and I’m happy it went in.

on whether it’s a relief to have his first goal of the season…
Yeah, definitely. I was waiting for my first goal but I wasn’t really thinking about it too much because I knew once I got the first one that more would follow, so I’m just happy to get off the mark now.
