Interview

Ozil - We showed character… and quality

Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker spoke to the media after our 5-2 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Both were in buoyant mood after we claimed our first away win of the Premier League season, and this is what they had to say:

on the game…

PM - We started really well and then to be 1-0 behind was difficult. We stuck to the gameplan and created a lot of chances but couldn’t execute it. At half-time we said we needed to execute better and our guys up top did it. I think it was crucial today that we had Mesut, the way he created chances and scored the important goal was very good for us.

on the game…

MO - At the end of the day, we are so happy to win the game. Of course we knew it’d be difficult at Everton but we showed character, we believed in ourselves and we won the game.

on starting with Alexis and Lacazette…

MO - In training we always show our quality together, so today on the pitch you saw from the start until the end we played very well in front of the goal. We were a little bit unlucky in front of goal but especially in the second half we showed our quality.

on the scoreline…

PM - You could sense it from the start. We created chances and that’s what we never lack. We just lacked execution. Even at 1-0 down we showed that we stick together. We had a good game plan, we knew they were under pressure and we really took advantage.

on whether Arsenal wanted to answer critics today…

PM - No, we speak directly to each other at the training ground and analyse the situation. We don’t need any other people to analyse what we do. We dealt with the situation away from home magnificently.
