U-23s: Arsenal v Tottenham - The Brief

Arsenal U-23's celebrate their opener against West Ham

Our under-23s will face Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium on Friday night, as Freddie Ljungberg’s side look to record back-to-back wins.

THE STORY SO FAR

We come into this fixture off the back of a 3-2 win over West Ham United at London Stadium, where we claimed our first three points of the season.

Eddie Nketiah and Julio Pleguezuelo gave us a two-goal advantage going in at the break, but the Hammers soon reduced the deficit to a single goal. Nketiah continued to threaten, though, and soon after scored our third to seal the win.

Prior to that, we were beaten on the opening day of the season against Manchester City in a thrilling 6-5 encounter, before being held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at Emirates Stadium.

This means we’ve now scored nine goals in our last three Premier League 2 outings - averaging three goals per game.

THE OPPOSITION

Tottenham are currently 11th in the Premier League 2 table, having failed to win any of their three opening league fixtures.

They kicked off their 2018/19 season with a 3-1 home defeat to West Ham United, before being held to consecutive 1-1 draws by Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Josh Onomah

Josh Onomah will be one of the most experienced players out on the field on Friday night, having made 33 Championship appearances for Aston Villa last season.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder thrives in tight spaces due to his close ball control, and he’s always looking to unlock the opposition’s defence. The England under-21 international recorded four goals and three assists in all competitions last season.

ONE TO WATCH

Having failed to score in his first two outings of the season, Nketiah bagged a brace against West Ham - and he could have easily left with the match ball.

Not only was he clinical in front of goal and composed on the ball, he was also pressing from the front and playing a vital role in our build-up play.

Eddie Nketiah celebrates against West Ham

Nketiah has now made 30 appearances for the under-23s across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and assisting three along the way.
