Podolski on winning the World Cup

Lukas Podolski believes that the secret to Germany’s World Cup success was their ability to bond as a squad.

Joachim Low’s side were one of the pre-tournament favourites in Brazil and won six of their seven games on their way to lifting the trophy.

Podolski will never forget finally winning the competition, having been beaten in the semi-finals in 2006 and 2010.

"As a child, you looked at other World Cups and the players who won it. Now we [have done it], and that's special and amazing"

“You don't believe it [when you hold the trophy aloft],” he told Arsenal Player. “I think you believe it when you stop playing football.

“I always enjoy looking at the pictures and videos, but when you stand there with the cup, it's something special. It's amazing.

“As a child, you looked at other World Cups and the players who won it. Now we [have done it], and that's special and amazing. You don't have words for it.

“There's always pressure when you play for a big team," he added. "We knew we had a good side, but all the games in the group stage were tough. We drew against Ghana and had a tough game against the United States.

“Everyone remembers the game against Brazil and thinks it was easy, but the tournament was not easy. You have to focus in every game.

“We were together for eight weeks but we stuck together as a team, and that was the key reason for winning the World Cup. We were a team and won it as a team.”
