World Cup: Xhaka inspires Switzerland comeback

Granit Xhaka scores for Switzerland

We had another three players in action on in Friday’s World Cup group games. Scroll down to find out how they got on.

Granit Xhaka inspired a dramatic win for Switzerland over Group E opponents Serbia. After going behind to an early Aleksandar Mitrovic header, Xhaka collected a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable strike into the far corner to level for Switzerland.

And then with just moments to go, Xhaka started a quick counter-attack by finding Mario Gavranovic, who set up Xherdan Shaqiri to net a 90th-minute winner. Stephan Lichtsteiner captained Switzerland for the full match, who now go into Wednesday’s final group game against Costa Rica joint-top of the table with Brazil.

Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi was a late substitute in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Iceland. After a goalless first half, Ahmed Musa struck twice to secure an important three points for the Super Eagles.

And finally, Joel Campbell did not feature as Costa Rica were beaten in dramatic circumstances by Brazil in Group E.

The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw but, at the start of second-half stoppage time, Philippe Coutinho stabbed the five-time champions in front from close range. Neymar made sure of the Selecao’s win with virtually the final kick, volleying home Douglas Costa’s inviting centre.
