‘Dan’s a special and explosive player’

Montemurro

Joe Montemurro believes that we delivered an almost perfect performance on Thursday night as we defeated Bristol City 4-0 in the Women’s Super League.

Vivianne Miedema scored her fourth hat-trick of the season, taking her tally up to 28 goals across all competitions, while Danielle Carter made an emotional return from injury.

We spoke to Montemurro after the final whistle - and this is what he said:

on the intensity that his side showed…

We’re getting there. It’s always difficult to keep the rhythm going between long breaks but there was some good signs, minus a little bit of the second half where we became a little bit long and lost our positioning. Apart from that it was positive, though, and I thought the first half was very good.

on Bristol City having two golden chances instantly after the break…

The story of our beautiful game, eh. It’s always going to happen and all credit to Bristol because they were very organised and they took almost advantage of a little bit of sloppiness at the start of the second half, but I think we regained our positions, closed up the spaces and were back on top for the rest of the game.

on what pleased him most about the performance…

We’ve been training to exploit certain spaces and Lisa Evans was brilliant down the right side. We exploited that side with our movement and especially with wingers coming inside and our midfielders getting into attacking positions. The patterns of play are starting to form again and as we play more games, we’ll start to do things quicker, similar to the start of the season.

on Carter returning from injury…

I think the hardest thing has been the group. The group’s been on egg shells because of the size of the group and the fact that we all really care about each other. We’re really disappointed when we’ve got players out of action so it just shows the love and passion they have for each other. That’s been the hardest thing because so many of our players have been gutted that their teammates can’t be out there playing with them. They’re our teammates so we want them to be available, we want them to be playing and we want training to be exciting, competitive and intense. This week’s training has been amazing because we’ve had a large amount of players competing and working with each other, so that’s allowed us to do some different things. It’s been very difficult with limited players on the pitch.

on Carter hitting the crossbar with her first shot…

Thank god, we wouldn’t have heard the end of it! That’s Dan Carter for you, she’s a special player and an explosive player. We just love having her back and hopefully we can get her improving and playing her best.
