Interview

‘We had to stand up to the fight and match them’

Rob Holding was one of our standout performers in the Carabao Cup win over West Ham United on Tuesday night.

After the game he spoke exclusively to Arsenal.com. Here’s what he said:

on the performance…

I think we knew we had space down the wides with them playing five at the back with the two on one down the sides, so that was sort of [about] switching it as fast as we could and then find the holes, which we did eventually find. We managed to sneak a goal and then we knew they’d go long ball with Andy Carroll coming on, so we knew it would be tough and we just had to stand up to the fight and match them.

on the his performance at the back…

Yes, definitely [happy]. We kept a clean sheet and that’s the main thing for us as defenders and I didn’t really remember them having a shot and testing Ospina, so it’s a positive to take out.

on whether it is difficult getting into the game…

A little bit, you could say that, we train with the team that is going in the Premier League, so we keep at it in the cups and we’ve proved ourselves I think in the last couple of months in the cups and progressed. It’s decent to get into the semi-finals and hopefully we can get to the final.

on Joe Willock…

I think all the young lads, Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson, Eddie [Nketiah], Josh Dasilva and Ben [Sheaf] came on, they all put it in during training and they’ve got some ability so it helps and they fit in.

on winning the competition…

I want to win as many trophies as I can in my career, so to get to the final and have another chance of winning one is perfect.
