Vivianne Miedema scored the crucial opening goal as the Netherlands reached their first-ever World Cup semi-final with a 2-0 win over Italy.
Our striker led the line, just in front of Danielle van de Donk, but was unable to get the better of Laura Giuliani during a goalless first half.
Netherlands continued to mount the pressure and after Van de Donk had struck the bar from 25 yards, Miedema powered Sherida Spitse’s delivery home for her third goal of the tournament.
Spitse would turn provider again 10 minutes later, picking out Stephanie van der Gragt to book Oranje’s place in the final four. Jill Roord replaced Miedema with three minutes to go.
Leonie Maier played 47 minutes but was unable to help Germany overcome Sweden in Rennes.
Lina Magull had given the Germans an early lead but Sofia Jakobsson and Stina Blackstenius struck either side of the interval to inflict Germany’s first defeat since April 2018.
The result means Sweden will face Netherlands on Wednesday, with Miedema, Roord and Van de Donk expected to feature at 8pm (UK time).
Beth Mead and Leah Williamson will be hoping to play in Tuesday’s semi-final against USA, after helping England beat Norway last Thursday.
