'She's a special player and a special person'

Jordan Nobbs reached a significant milestone in her Arsenal career on Tuesday when she scored her 50th and 51st goals for the club as we beat Liverpool 3-0.

Afterwards, Joe Montemurro praised the England international and reflected on the win, how he changed things at the break and delivering a perfect response after the draw at Yeovil.

This is what he told Arsenal Media after the match:

on the team’s performance…

Apart from that little scare at the start with the free-kick, which I think was their only shot on target all game, we were very happy, controlled the game and were deserved winners. I like the fact that we managed the game well as we were obviously fatigued and tired, so it was an amazing reaction to Sunday.

on what he said at half-time…

The thing that let us down in the first half was taking care in the attacking third. What I mean by that is we were doing well to get into the attacking third, but that final pass, that final ability to take that extra second to find the right pass, was not happening. We just adjusted a couple of the runs and a couple of the movements, which was good, and also a bit of adjustments in terms of the build up which allowed our full-backs a little more ability to get higher, and obviously the second goal especially came from an amazing build up and the fullback getting forward.

on going close four times in a minute…

I turned to one of the coaching staff and said, ‘It’s not another Yeovil, is it?’ and they said ‘No. Not tonight.’ It was four or five shots in a row I think! They defended desperately and as I said, we just needed to take care in front of goal and we’ll beat teams. I’m happy with the reaction, we managed the fatigue and now we’re ready for Birmingham.

on Jordan Nobbs scoring her 50th goal for the club…

Jordan’s a special player and a special person, and I’ve never met someone who loves the club as much as she does. She just deserves everything she gets – she works so hard.

on whether this was the best possible response to drawing with Yeovil…

Absolutely. This team is growing in character and growing in strength, and they believe in what they’re doing and they believe every day that they come on the training pitch. But listen, Yeovil happens in football. We’ve seen a lot of teams even in the Premier League have this – Manchester United lost 1-0 to West Brom two weeks ago! The football is getting harder and harder and harder, and the more you can control, the more you can control your destiny. But the reality is that these teams are hard to break down and they give you different problems that you need to control.
