‘Captaincy has brought me out my comfort zone’

Kim Little

Kim Little is set to play her first Champions League fixture in six years this September.

The Scotland international was just 23 years old in her last European outing, but this time around she’s club captain and desperate to take us all the way, having recently signed a new contract.

Read on to find out more about her senior role at the club, her aims for 2019/20 and much, much more:

on her passion for tactics…

Yeah, I think when you’re involved with the game for a long period of time it’s natural to think everything about it and be so detailed - and that’s a huge part of how Joe works and our coaching staff work. On the pitch and off it it’s great to be able to learn from Joe in terms of tactically, and from our assistant coach Aaron and our goalkeeping coach Leanne. It’s an area that can always develop and it never stops, which is another part of the game that I love.

on taking up a more senior role in the squad…

It’s been very different for me coming back to the club after being in America for three years. I’ve taken on a different role which I’ve maybe never done before, which has definitely made me challenge myself and bring me out of my comfort zone, which again, I’m just extremely grateful for. I hope I can improve on that side of my game in terms of leading the team, helping the younger ones develop and being a person that they can look up to and hopefully help them improve their game too.

on having the honour of leading us out for another European night…

I’ve spoken to a few people about this but Champions League just brings that something extra to your season. We’re so happy to be back in the Champions league this year and obviously we don’t know who we’re going to be playing yet in the last 32, but those midweek late night games under the floodlights just add a little bit more to the season, so hopefully we can be a strong contender and put ourselves in a place to progress in that tournament as well.

on what she wants to achieve this season…

For us it’s to have a squad that can challenge again for the league. I think the league this year will be a lot more challenging than last year with the teams that have come in and with how Manchester City and Chelsea have struggled, along with us, so it’s to retain that title and to progress within all the cup tournaments. We want to be the best we can and to keep this club at the top of the game.
