Women: Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal - Report

HOW IT HAPPENED

A late own goal from Sari van Veenendaal condemned us to a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Kingsmeadow.

Chelsea threatened early on when Ramona Bachmann’s effort was kept out by Van Veenendaal - but we soon sent a message of our own.

Jordan Nobbs played an inch-perfect ball into the box for Vivianne Miedema, but the Dutch star saw her effort cannon back off the crossbar.

Ji soon hit the post for Chelsea, in a frenzied spell inside our box which ended with Maren Mjelde tapping the ball home to break the deadlock.

We began the second half trailing, but nearly enjoyed a perfect start when Danielle van de Donk’s controlled strike was turned over by Hedvig Lindahl.

Miedema soon levelled the scores, twisting and turning away from her marker before seeing her effort bounce in via the post.

The hosts responded immediately, with Ji’s strike finding its way over the line despite the best efforts of Jemma Rose.

The game was now reminiscent of a basketball match, with both sides surging the length of the pitch to find the fourth goal.

When Chelsea failed to clear their lines, Dominique Janssen swept the ball home to draw us level once again.

But after Beth Mead’s half-volley was kept out by a combination of Lindahl and the posts, Chelsea stole all three points with a late strike crossing the line after hitting both the post and Van Veenendaal.

We sit fourth in the Women’s Super League table, six points between new leaders Chelsea.
