‘Now the others have a little more pressure’

Leno and Guendouzi celebrate against Cardiff City
Leno and Guendouzi celebrate against Cardiff City

We moved level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

After the match, Bernd Leno spoke to the media and discussed the benefits of playing before our top-four rivals.

Here’s what he said:

on the performance…

I think the most important thing was that we won. It was a tough game and very difficult because Cardiff are very strong on set-pieces and physical, so the most important thing was to win.

on the slow start…

I think we started very well. In the first 10 minutes we had some chances to score and didn’t take them, then Cardiff played better and we were a little bit nervous. They had some chances and we knew about their quality and physicality, so it was very hard to play against them with the long balls. We’ve also had some injuries so I think it was a tough game.

on the relief of being given a penalty…

I wasn’t sure if all the situations were penalties, but at the end the referee whistled and Auba scored so we won. Maybe the goal at the end is not so good for us, but the most important thing was winning.

on putting pressure on Chelsea…

Our goal is to get into the top four again. I’m not sure if Manchester City and Manchester United won their games, but tomorrow Chelsea have a little bit more pressure and we will wait on their mistakes.
