Maitland-Niles - I’ve gained vital experience

When asked whether he had been playing in his favoured position this season, Ainsley Maitland-Niles gave a wry smile.

The England Under-20 international counts himself as a central midfielder, but has performed well at left wing-back - and says the experience of performing in the Europa League has been “vital”.

This is what he told the media ahead of Thursday’s game against BATE Borisov:

on what he’s gained from playing in Europa…

I think that I’ve gained vital experience playing in this competition, playing with top players, against some difficult opposition. I’ve got the boss to thank for that.

on playing in heated atmospheres…

You’ve just got to get on and do the job. You’re there to win the game and that’s what we’ve got to try and do.

on the chances in the first team he has had…

It’s a great opportunity to play, showcase your talent and the boss has given loads of young players the chance to show that.

on where he prefers playing…

We’ve had a few conversations, but I’m happy to play wherever [the boss] puts me!
