U-23s: Arsenal v West Ham - The Brief

THE STORY SO FAR

Following a run of three league games without a win, Steve Gatting’s side will be keen to pick up three points this Friday when we take on West Ham at Meadow Park.

We remain in fifth place in the Premier League 2 table after Monday’s defeat at Swansea, and need a boost to keep pace with the chasing pack behind leaders Liverpool.

Just a point behind the fourth-place Hammers, two behind Leicester and three behind Everton, a win could potentially propel us up to second.

THE OPPOSITION

West Ham come into this Friday’s game off the back of a 5-1 home defeat to Derby, who struck four times in the first half to blow them away.

Despite this, the Hammers have picked up impressive wins against Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs and Swansea this season.

ONE TO WATCH

Tyreece John-Jules netted his first strike for Steve Gatting's side against Tottenham

Following a string of good performances with Kwame Ampadu’s under-18 side, Tyreece John-Jules has earned opportunities this season under Gatting.

The forward made his first appearance of the season against Tottenham and scored early in the first half to bring us back into that game.

John-Jules also played the full 90 minutes in our previous fixture against Swansea, impressing with his hold-up play and creativity.

LAST TIME WE MET

Chris Willock netted a last-gasp equaliser at Upton Park the last time we faced the Hammers

We haven’t faced West Ham since the 2015/16 season, when we drew 1-1 at Upton Park.

Alex Pike struck shortly before the break to open the scoring for the hosts, but a late goal from Chris Willock drew us level.
