‘We need to work hard to stay in third’

Lacazette

Alexandre Lacazette had another evening to remember at Emirates Stadium.

The France international netted his 13th goal of the season, clipping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s flick-on over Martin Dubravka as we leapfrogged Tottenham into third place in the Premier League.

Lacazette spoke to the media after the game. Scroll down for a full transcript:

on moving up to third…

I didn’t know it was 10 Premier League home wins in a row, but we knew that tonight we had the opportunity to move into third. We wanted to win to do that. We played well. We did everything the coach asked us to and it was good.

on the game…

It was a big game tonight. We knew it was going to be a tough game but we listened to the coach. He said we had to be patient and efficient in the two boxes. We did that today.

on Newcastle…

We saw many videos of them and I’ve watched them in the Premier League before. It’s always like this against Newcastle, like it is with all the teams in the Premier League.

on the atmosphere in the stadium…

I can feel the difference from last season. Now we may qualify for the Champions League, so we’ve done as much as we can tonight. We’ve done as much as possible to get into third place.

on his partnership with Aubameyang…

We both want to help the team do well. Auba scores many goals and I try to do the same, and also to help him to score as many as he can. He does the same for me, so it’s up to us to help the team to score as many goals to win.

on scoring lots of goals at the Emirates…

I would like to score a lot of goals away from home, but if we win in the end then that’s more important for the team and for the club.

on how different this team is to last season…

I think we are more confident and everybody knows what we have to do. When you win a lot of games in a row, of course there is a lot of confidence. We’re working every day to get into the third place so now that we are, we have to work hard to stay in this position.

on what we need to do to qualify for the Champions League…

To play like we did tonight, to be good defensively by getting a clean sheet and to score a goal. If we do this, then we can secure Champions League football.

on Unai Emery’s infleunce…

He’s good. He believes in us. He wants us to play from the back, from the edge of our box, so we try to do what he wants.

on whether Emery’s given the players the belief to succeed…

Yeah of course. He says we can reach the Champions League but we have to believe in ourselves. We need to play our football and that’s what we’re doing.

on whether this is the best season of his career…

Maybe. I don’t know because it’s not finished. I will try to make it the best.
