Women: Arsenal v West Ham United - The Brief

Arsenal Women - team huddle

Joe Montemurro’s side will welcome West Ham United to Meadow Park on Sunday as we hunt for our fifth consecutive win of the season

THE STORY SO FAR

We’ve made a promising start to the season, having scored 24 goals and conceded just once in our opening four fixtures.

We kicked-off our Women’s Super League campaign with a 5-0 win over Liverpool, before beating Yeovil Town Ladies 7-0 in a comprehensive victory on the road.

Miedema against Liverpool

Vivianne Miedema scored a hat-trick against the Reds, while Kim Little has found the back of the net in each of her last five appearances for club and country.

At this moment in time, we have also scored more goals in the WSL (12) than the rest of the league combined (11).

THE OPPOSITION

West Ham United come into this fixture off back of a 0-0 draw with Reading on their Women’s Super League debut. The visitors posed a greater threat in the final third, but the Hammers defence stood strong to salvage a point.

Prior to this, we beat them 3-1 in the Continental Tyres Cup on the opening day of the season, before they fired four past Lewes Ladies and Millwall Lionesses to secure back-to-back victories.

The Hammers recruited a new No 9 over the summer - and Little will be more than aware of her attacking threat. Scotland international Jane Ross joined the club in July 2018 from Manchester City, and recently hit a brace against Lewes Ladies.

THE MANAGER’S NOTES

“They will be well organised,” Montemurro told Arsenal.com.

Joe Montemurro

“They were very well organised the last time that we played them and they have some players that have played at good levels and can unlock games, so we need to be very, very careful.

“But we want to be in control from the start and make sure that we don’t give them an opportunity to get into a rhythm and get into the game.”

ONE TO WATCH

Beth Mead will want to maintain her fine goalscoring form on Sunday, having struck her 20th goal for the club last Wednesday against Yeovil Ladies.

Beth Mead

A versatile forward who’s capable of playing through the middle or on either flank, she’s shown great understanding with strike partner Miedema.

With quick feet and bags of pace, Mead often plays on the shoulder of the last defender, and looks to find her opportunities by racing in behind the opposition’s defence.
