Following the sudden passing of former goalkeeper Alan Miller due to a heart attack at the age of 51 on June 3, his family have issued the following message expressing their thanks to Arsenal supporters for the support they have received from them and the club:

“While we are still coming to terms with the shock of losing Alan so suddenly, the love and support shown to him from the Arsenal fans has provided us with great strength.

“Alan was so proud to sign for Arsenal as a youngster. He loved Highbury and being involved at what was such an exciting time for the club and the fans.

“He had so much respect for the history and values of the club and it made a real impact on him as he made his career journey from being part of the first ever intake at Lilleshall to Highbury.

“Alan made so many friends at the club and was always made to feel fantastically welcome whenever he returned.

“Bob Wilson was an inspirational person for him to learn from and he held Bob in such a high regard, while he made so many great friends in the youth team when he first signed professional terms.

“For Alan to be part of the squad that won the league in ‘89 at Anfield was so special for him and all of our family. While he found himself understudy to John Lukic then David Seaman, he always loved being with the club and part of that group with a wonderful camaraderie. Those players became lifelong friends and that meant a huge amount to him.

“He treasured every moment at Arsenal and it was only when a wonderful opportunity to make a new start as number one goalkeeper at Middlesbrough with Bryan Robson was he tempted to make a permanent move away.

“When he made a Premier League return at the beginning of the 1995/96 season he was so happy that he got such a great reception from the Arsenal fans. He loved the supporters and genuinely felt a great connection with them.

“There are so many people at the club who were family to Alan and this was so important to him. His love for Arsenal never waned and gave him a constant sense of pride and belonging when he retired from playing.

“While this is understandably a difficult time for the family, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to everyone who has contacted us directly, spoken in the media or on social media so positively about Alan. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and know that Alan would have appreciated the love for him so much.”
